Lai savilktu līdzīgos saskaitāmos, jāsaskaita to koeficienti, bet burtu reizinātāji jāatstāj bez izmaiņām.
Piemēram, savelkot līdzīgos saskaitāmos: $$2a + 3a = 5a$$.

Izteiksmē var būt vairāki nezināmie, lai vieglāk atšķirt līdzīgos locekļus, tos var pasvītrot ar vienādām līnijām.

Vienkāršojot izteiksmi, parasti burtus raksta alfabētiskā secībā, beigās raksta skaitli, kuram nav burts.

Kādas izteiksmes aizstāšanu ar citu tai identisku izteiksmi sauc par izteiksmes identisku pārveidošanu.
Savelkot līdzīgos saskaitāmos (līdzīgos locekļus), iegūst identisku izteiksmi sākotnējai.
