Last Saturday evening, instead of going out with friends, 16-year-old Emma decided to climb inside an active volcano. She did not pack a backpack or buy a plane ticket. Instead, she put on her virtual reality headset, adjusted the controls, and joined a live virtual expedition to Iceland’s famous Fagradalsfjall volcano.
Within seconds, her quiet bedroom disappeared. She found herself standing on black volcanic rock under a dark Arctic sky. A professional guide, streaming live from Iceland, explained how lava forms beneath the Earth’s surface. Emma could turn her head and look around in every direction. She watched glowing red lava slowly flowing down the mountainside, while steam rose into the cold night air.
During the tour, participants were able to ask questions through a chat function. The guide responded in real time, describing the temperature near the lava and explaining why the eruption was considered relatively safe to observe from a distance. At one point, a drone camera flew directly over the crater, giving viewers a dramatic bird’s-eye view of molten rock moving beneath the surface.
The experience felt surprisingly realistic. Emma could hear the cracking sounds of cooling lava and the strong wind blowing across the volcanic field. Although she was physically sitting in her room, the immersive technology created the powerful illusion of standing only metres away from one of nature’s most dangerous phenomena.
However, the tour also revealed the limits of virtual travel. Emma could not feel the heat of the lava on her skin or smell the sulphur in the air. She knew she was completely safe, far from any real danger. The emotional intensity was exciting, but it was different from facing the volcano in person.
After removing the headset, Emma reflected on the experience. The virtual tour had cost far less than a trip to Iceland and had no environmental impact. She had not taken a flight or contributed to overcrowding at a fragile natural site. While she still dreams of visiting Iceland one day, the virtual expedition allowed her to explore a powerful natural event in a safe, affordable, and environmentally responsible way.

2. One major drawback of the digital tour was the inability to detect the specific that typically fills the air during a volcanic eruption.

3. One of the main advantages of the expedition was that it was an way to see a volcano without the high cost of a plane ticket.
