Last spring, fourteen-year-old Lily from Australia joined an online project called "School Life Across the Ocean". Her partner was Noah, a student from the United States. For one month, they compared their school experiences and prepared a digital exhibition for both classes.
Noah explained that he had attended an elementary school until the age of eleven. After that, he moved to middle school, where students changed classrooms for different subjects. He was now in his first year of high school. His school was a public school, so it was supported with public money, and families did not pay school fees. However, his cousin attended a charter school that offered a special technology programme.
Lily’s experience was different. In Australia, she attended a government school near her town. She said that many Australian families also chose Catholic schools or private schools. Her best friend studied at a Catholic school, although Lily did not know much about its religious lessons because they rarely discussed them.
The most surprising part of the project was learning about students who lived far from towns. Lily showed Noah a video about distance education. Some students joined lessons online because travelling to school every day was impossible. Teachers sent learning materials, organised video lessons and regularly checked the students’ work.
For their final exhibition, Lily and Noah created an interactive map, recorded short interviews and designed a quiz. Noah was surprised that “public school” in the United States and “government school” in Australia could describe similar types of schools. Lily discovered that the names of school stages were not always the same in both countries. Their project won a prize, and the two classes decided to continue working together the following year.
