Everyone makes mistakes. We may forget an important date, speak without thinking, break something or make a decision that creates a problem for another person. In these situations, an apology can be an important first step towards making things better. However, saying “I’m sorry” does not always solve the problem by itself.
Studies of human relationships show that a good apology usually has several parts. First, people need to say clearly what they did wrong. They should avoid giving too many excuses or putting the blame on somebody else. Saying “I should have been more careful”, for example, shows that a person accepts their part in the situation.
The other person’s feelings are important too. A mistake may leave someone angry, disappointed or upset. When people apologise, they can show that they have noticed these feelings. Saying “I didn’t mean to upset you” can make it clear that causing hurt was not their aim. However, this does not mean that the other person must stop feeling upset immediately.
Actions after an apology are also important. If someone says “I’ll make sure it doesn’t happen again,” their future behaviour should support that promise. Sometimes there is also a practical way to put things right. A person might replace something they broke, correct wrong information or offer to help with a problem they caused.
Research suggests that a good apology can reduce angry feelings and help people trust each other again. It can also make it easier for two people to talk about what happened. However, trust often takes time to return, especially after a serious mistake. Forgiveness may take time as well, and an apology cannot force another person to forgive.
An apology cannot change the past. What it can do is show respect for another person’s feelings and a wish to improve the situation. For this reason, the most useful apologies combine honest words with positive action.
