In September 1991, two German hikers were walking high in the Alps when they noticed a human body in the ice. At first, people thought the man must have been a mountain climber who had died in a recent accident. They were wrong. Scientists later discovered that the body was more than 5,300 years old. The man, now known as Ötzi, had lived at a time when people had started using metal.
The ice had protected not only his body but also many of his clothes and personal things. Ötzi wore clothes made from animal skins and carried several useful objects. One of the most unusual was an axe made from metal. This kind of metal was very valuable at that time, so Ötzi may have been an important person. He also carried things for catching animals and a small knife. Some of his equipment was not ready to use, so he might have been preparing it during his journey.
Scientists discovered other signs that helped them learn about his everyday life. His body showed that he must have spent a lot of time near open fires. Food in his stomach showed that he ate meat, grain and plants. Researchers also discovered sixty-one tattoos on his body. Many of them were in places where he often experienced pain, so the tattoos may have been used to help with pain rather than only to change the way his skin looked.
For many years, scientists thought Ötzi might have died because of the cold or because of an accident in the mountains. Then, in 2001, a special test showed something unexpected inside his left shoulder. He had been badly hurt, and he also had a serious problem with his head and a deep cut on one hand. These signs suggest that he can’t have died in an ordinary mountain accident. Researchers now believe that another person attacked him.
However, many questions remain. Ötzi may have been escaping from someone, or he might have been involved in a fight before he went into the mountains. His valuable axe was still with him, so the person who attacked him can’t have wanted only the things he owned. More than five thousand years later, scientists can explain many parts of Ötzi’s life, but they still cannot say exactly what happened during his final hours.

1. The body was first spotted by while they were walking high in the Alps.
2. Some of Ötzi’s equipment for use, which suggests he may still have been preparing it during his journey.
3. Researchers think the tattoos may have been intended to in areas where Ötzi often felt discomfort.
