3. Pangaea: The Lost Supercontinent

 

 

Today the Earth has several continents separated by large oceans. However, millions of years ago, the planet looked very different. Scientists believe that most of the land on Earth was once connected in one enormous landmass called Pangaea. This giant continent existed about 335 to 200 million years ago.
The name “Pangaea” comes from ancient Greek and means “all Earth.” It was surrounded by a huge ocean called Panthalassa, which covered most of the planet. Because almost all land was connected, animals and plants could move across very large areas without crossing oceans.
One intriguing thing about Pangaea was its unusual climate. Because the continent was so large, the middle of the land was very far from the sea. Scientists believe these inland areas were probably very dry deserts with little rain. Temperatures may have changed greatly between hot days and cold nights.

Another puzzle comes from fossils discovered on continents that are now very far apart. For example, fossils of the same small animal called Mesosaurus have been discovered in both South America and Africa. This animal lived in freshwater and could not swim across an ocean. This discovery helped scientists understand that these continents were once connected.
There are also interesting clues in the Earth’s rocks. Some mountain ranges on different continents seem to be parts of the same ancient mountains. For example, parts of the Appalachian Mountains in North America are very similar to mountains in Scotland and Scandinavia. This shows that these areas were once joined together.
The breaking of Pangaea also caused big changes on Earth. Around 200 million years ago, large gaps began to appear in the land. Volcanoes erupted along these areas and sent huge amounts of lava and gas into the air. Some scientists think these volcanic events may have changed the planet’s climate and caused many animals and plants to die out.

Over millions of years the land slowly separated into two large parts called Laurasia and Gondwana. These landmasses later divided again and slowly formed the continents we know today.
Even today the continents are still moving, although the movement is extremely slow. Scientists continue to study rocks, fossils, and the shape of the continents to learn more about how our planet has changed. The story of Pangaea shows that the Earth is always changing, and many secrets about its past are still waiting to be discovered.
