William Shakespeare is one of the most famous writers in history, but many details about his life are still unclear. He was born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, a small town in England. His father was a glove-maker, and his mother came from a farming family. Shakespeare probably studied Latin, literature, and old stories at his local school, although there are no school records to prove this.
As a young adult, he married Anne Hathaway, who was eight years older than him. Together they had three children: Susanna, and the twins Hamnet and Judith. Later, Shakespeare moved to London to work in the theatre. At first, he acted in plays, but he soon became known for his writing talent.
Shakespeare wrote around 38 plays and over 150 short poems called sonnets. His works include serious plays with sad endings, comedies, and history plays. Some of his best-known titles are "Macbeth", "Romeo and Juliet", and "Twelfth Night". One interesting fact is that Shakespeare created many words that people still use today, such as “lonely”, “fair play”, and “break the ice”.
Another less well-known detail is that Shakespeare was also a businessman. He put money into property in Stratford and became a part-owner of the Globe Theatre in London. The Globe was an open-air theatre where thousands of people watched performances, including many from the lower classes who paid just a penny to stand.
In 1613, the Globe Theatre burned down during a performance when a stage cannon went off by mistake and started a fire. Luckily, no one was seriously hurt. Shakespeare returned to Stratford soon after and continued to write until his death in 1616.
Today, Shakespeare is studied around the world, and people still admire his rich language, strong characters, and deep knowledge of human feelings. For this reason, he is often called “the Bard of Avon”.
