Subject: Greetings from the clouds in Peru!

Dear Sophie,
I hope you are having a wonderful summer holiday back home! I'm writing this email from a small, cosy cafe in the mountains of Peru. I still can't believe that I'm actually here. As you know, I love travelling and exploring the world, but this trip has been the biggest adventure of my whole life!
Yesterday, I finally visited the famous ancient city of Machu Picchu. It is hidden high up in the Andes mountains. Before I came here, I looked at so many photos online, but seeing it with my own eyes was completely magical.
However, getting to the top was not easy at all. Back home in England, our countryside is very flat, and our hills are quite small, so going for a walk is always relaxing. But here in Peru, the mountains are giant! To see the ancient city, I had to walk up thousands of very high stone steps. Because the mountains are so high in the sky, the air is very thin, which made it very difficult to breathe while walking. My rucksack felt incredibly heavy, my legs were aching, and I had to stop every ten minutes just to catch my breath. It was definitely the hardest physical challenge I have ever done.
The weather was also quite strange. When we started walking early in the morning, it was cold, and there was a thick, white fog everywhere. I was worried that we wouldn't see anything! But luckily, the weather changed after two hours. The sun came out, the sky became bright blue, and it suddenly felt very warm.
When I finally reached the top, all my tiredness disappeared. The view was breathtaking. I saw the old stone houses and temples of Machu Picchu sitting on top of the green mountain, surrounded by deep valleys and beautiful clouds. It felt like I was standing on top of the world.
I also met some very cute animals called llamas. They live on the mountain and walk around among the tourists. They have long necks and very soft, fluffy fur. I even managed to take a funny selfie with one of them! I bought a lovely, colourful scarf made of llama wool from a local market to bring home for you.
The tickets for the train and the park were quite expensive, and the journey took a very long time, but it was worth every single penny. This place has a wonderful history, and the people of Peru are incredibly kind and friendly. I have taken hundreds of amazing photos, and I cannot wait to show them to you when I get back to school next month.
I must go now because my tour group is leaving for dinner. We are going to try some traditional Peruvian food tonight!
Take care and write back soon to tell me about your summer.
Your best friend,
Emily
