  • Some characteristics of birds
The main characteristic of a bird is feathers. No other animal has feathers. Other important features for birds are wings and hollow bones. Birds also lay eggs, like reptiles, however they are warm-blooded, like mammals. A bird characterized also toothless beaked jaws, that we have known as a beak. There are different types of beaks. The shape of the beak depends of what the bird eats, for example, toucan has a large wide and rounded beak because it feeds on fruit, but eagle has large hooked beak because it hunt small animals.
Wings gave birds the ability to fly, although further evolution has led to the loss of flight in some birds, including penguins.
A bird has got a pair of legs with claws.
In total there are about 10,000 species of birds described worldwide, though one estimate of the real number places it at almost twice that.
