A group of teenagers set out on what should be an ordinary weekend trip. As plans begin to go wrong, disagreements, unexpected decisions and difficult choices reveal much more about the main character than first impressions suggest. Read the text. For each question, choose the part that provides the best evidence for the statement about the character.

1. Ryan had talked about the hiking challenge all week. Three groups were taking part, and he was determined that his would finish first.
2. He was less pleased when Sam joined them. Sam was quiet, inexperienced and kept checking the map. Ryan assumed he would slow everyone down.
3. Half an hour later, Max pointed towards a narrow path through the trees. “Shortcut,” he said. Ryan had always admired his older cousin’s confidence, so he followed.
4. A warning sign stood beside the path. Ryan noticed it but did not stop to read it properly.
5. Sam did. “It says the path is closed after heavy rain.” Ryan glanced at the blue sky and carried on.
6. An hour later, the path disappeared among thick ferns. Ryan unfolded the map, turned it twice and said nothing.
7. Max wanted to continue uphill, but Sam studied a nearby stream and found it on the map. “We’ve gone too far east,” he said.
8. Ryan stared at him. The boy he had expected to be a problem was suddenly the only one who knew where they were.
9. When Max moved towards the hill, Ryan stopped him. “No. We’ve guessed enough.” He turned to Sam. “You lead.”
10. Soon afterwards, Lucy slipped on a wet rock and hurt her ankle. Ryan immediately forgot about finishing first.
11. He gave her his jacket and stayed beside her while the others went for help.
12. At the ranger’s hut, Ryan was asked why they had left the marked route. He could have blamed Max, but he admitted that he had chosen to follow.
13. The next morning, he found Sam outside. “I was wrong about you,” Ryan said quietly.
14. On their next walk, Ryan checked the route carefully and ignored Max’s suggestion of another shortcut.
15. He still enjoyed being first up a hill, but now he waited for the others at the top. Winning no longer seemed quite so important.
