For months the shutters of Mara’s house had stayed closed, keeping out the world and its noise. One morning she heard children laughing and, almost without thought, unlatched the window. A single beam of sunlight fell across the floor, painting warmth where shadows had lived. The world had not changed – but she had, for she had let it in.

Long after the guards had left, an old man remained by the city gate, lantern in hand. When asked why he kept watch, he said, “because danger does not sleep, and neither will I.” Each night he greeted travellers and warned them of the broken bridge ahead. No one ever saw the accident he prevented and that was the proof of his duty fulfilled.

When the lighthouse collapsed, the harbour fell dark, and ships drifted aimlessly at sea. Rather than wait for rescue, the townspeople gathered every lantern and placed them along the shore. From afar, sailors saw the coastline blaze with a hundred small stars. No one’s name was praised, only the light they built together.
