Task 3 continuation - Part II (9 points out of 17)

Fill each of the numbered blanks in the following passage. Use only one word in each space.

Giant tortoises
"These huge reptiles, surrounded (1) the black lava, and large cacti, seemed to my fancy (2) some antediluvian animals. The few dull-coloured birds cared no (3) for me than they did (4)  the great tortoises."

Two things in particular stand (5) about the giant tortoises: (6) size and their longevity. A male can grow to over 200 kg. The exact life expectancy of a wild Galapagos tortoise is probably 100 to 150 years.

Tortoises were highly prized by the pirates (7) frequented the island since they could be kept alive on ships (8) months, thus providing fresh meat and supplementing what must (9) been a very dull diet.

Darwin reported that "the breast-plate roasted, with the flesh on it, is very good; and the young tortoises make excellent soup."
