Giant tortoises
While perhaps not the most unique among the Galapagos fauna, the giant tortoises seem to attract the most attention. In The Voyage of the Beagle, Darwin describes the first encounter (1) a tortoise as follows:

"The day was hot, and the scrambling over the rough surface (2) very fatiguing; but I was well repaid (3) the strange Cyclopean scene. As I was walking along I met two large tortoises, each of which must have weighted at (4)  two hundred pounds: one was eating (5) piece of cactus, and as I approached, it stared (6) me and slowly walked away; the (7) gave a deep hiss, and drew in (8) head."
